What is an Explosion Proof Cable?

An explosion proof cable is a Class-rated cord used in flammable work sites. The heavy-duty cables can be applied to extend power or deliver data to an out-of-reach location or system. Due to the rugged nature of combustible facilities and hazardous locations, this type of cable may come with various protective features, to allow it to withstand aggressive compounds present at the site.

For example, some explosion proof cables are mud or oil resistant, which are ideal for mining sites or on-shore oil refineries. Explosion proof cables with corrosion resistant properties are suitable for combustible marine sites, such as shipyards and off-shore rigs.

Materials and Ratings

To prevent the creation of sparks, the outer layer of explosion proof cable components can be non-metallic. Common materials used for explosion proof cable components include hard plastic, thermoplastic compounds, neoprene, silicone and polyamide. For extra protection, the units could incorporate wire mesh grips, which is applicable to strain relief.

In the US, explosion proof ratings for cables are governed by the National Electric Code (NEC). The NEC imposes Classifications (Class I, II or III), Divisions (Division 1 and/or Division 2) and Groups (Group A-G; based on specific flammable substances) to ensure the equipment adheres to its application. International locations must comply with local electric and safety guidelines for flameproof cables, such as ATEX/IECEx directives. Explosion proof accessories may take on NEMA ratings for protection against rough or outdoor elements.

Types of Explosion Proof Cables

Additionally, explosion proof cables may be offered in various types: welded cables, armored cables, non-armored cables, flexible, crush or impact resistant and more. Other essential considerations for explosion proof cables include the following: temperature rating, wire size, conductors, insulation and bend radius.
